The Navi Mumbai Police has seized 72.5 kg of heroin, worth Rs 362.59 crore, from a container that was lying in the container freight station of Navkar Logistics, located at Ajivali village in Panvel, allegedly for over six months. The police said the search was carried out on Thursday following a tip-off from the Punjab Police.
The seizure comes less than 72 hours after Punjab Police in tandem with Gujarat Police recovered 75 kg of heroin from a container at Mundra Port.
A case under Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against the exporter, shipper and other unknown persons who facilitated the export and import of the contraband.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Suresh Mengade said, “We received an input on Wednesday evening from the Punjab Police that a consignment had landed at Nhava Sheva Port from Dubai… We verified the information and a team sent to the container freight station of Navkar Logistics on Thursday afternoon.”
He added that the container was transferred from the Nhava Sheva Port to the container freight station of Navkar Logistics.
The team of the Navi Mumbai Police Crime Branch searched the container freight station and found the container lying there. “We initially found marble tiles inside. But when we thoroughly checked, we observed that there is some deformity in the metal frame. For several hours, we used different equipment to cut the metal door frame, following which we found 168 packets of contraband,” said an officer.
The police said a forensic team examined the contraband and found it to be heroin. “We have learned that the container has been lying at the station since last December. We are trying to verify this,” said Mengade.
The police said a special investigation team has been set up to locate the accused. “We will try getting information from the customs on how the container landed there and also on the sender and receiver of the seized consignment,” said an officer.
Director General of Punjab Police Gaurav Yadav said, “The intelligence-led operation regarding the smuggling of heroin from the UAE was carried out jointly by the teams of Punjab Police and Maharashtra Police.” The DGP said that after concealing the contraband, the accused had welded the door border and repainted it.
